Let's talk about your way into law

At CMS Cameron McKenna we welcome law and non-law students alike. We’re also keen to talk to graduates from all backgrounds who are already working and looking for a career change.

If you’ve studied law

If you have already studied law, you’ll want to know a little more about the Legal Practice Course we’ll ask you to take. Well, at CMS Cameron McKenna we work with BBP Law School London, part of one of the largest professional education providers in Europe. Their reputation has been built through its exceptionally good links with the world’s biggest firms. You can find out more at www.bpplawschool.com

If you haven’t studied law before

If you’re from a non-law background, you’re not alone. About half of our trainees studied other subjects than law. We really do welcome them – they often bring a fresh passion to the subject. As a non-law applicant, you’ll first need to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law, otherwise known as the GDL. This conversion course will take you to the same level as a law graduate and prepare you for the Legal Practice Course.

What we’re really looking for

Whatever your background, you’ve probably heard the usual patter before. It goes something like this: you’ll need to be a great communicator, and a wonderful team player, and ambitious, and talented. And so on. All true. But what we really want to know is that, whether you’ve studied law, or you’re coming to this sector from a different background, you’ve thought about your future career more deeply than the average applicant.

Keep commercially aware

It’s important to remember that we’re a law firm that’s firmly focused on business so if you’re to succeed, you’ll need to develop a good level of commercial awareness too. Essentially, we work to ensure our clients’ businesses grow. So in addition to developing you into a fully fledged lawyer, we’ll be training you to identify commercial opportunities and make important business decisions.
